Step 1: Import video in VLC media player

Open VLC player > click 'Media' in the menu bar > Open File > select one or more video clips in local media folder > Open.

To start any video editing in VLC, turn on 'Advanced Controls' under 'View' in the menu bar.

Step 2: Use VLC to cut or trim the video

1. Drag the playing slide bar to the start point you'd like to cut or trim the video.

2. Click 'Record' button and 'Play' button, and VLC media player will begin recording the video.

There are two ways for you crop video with VLC media player:

Method 1 - Click 'Video' in the menu bar > move down to 'Crop' >select a specific aspect ratio, like 16:10, 4:3, 1.85:1, 1:1, etc > then video will be cropped for playback at that aspect ratio.

Method 2 - Scroll down to the bottom of the player and click 'Show extended settings' in the toolbar > switch to 'Video Effects' tab > Crop >set different values in the four positions (left, right, top and bottom) > Save.

Step 5: Rotate video in VLC

There are two settings for you to change video orientation inside VLC: Transform and Rotate.

From the drop-down list of Transform, you can choose Rotate by 90/180/270 degrees, Flip horizontally or vertically, Transcope or Anti-transcope. Or just turn on the Rotate option and set a specific rotate angle.

Note that enable Transform and Rotate simultaneously only if needed, or you will have to rotate the video at a cropped aspect ratio.

Color correction settings and some others are also available in VLC. But to add text, watermark, or subtitles, VLC is not a good way to go. As we said before, you can't even adjust the font size. If another software with more editing features is still needed, try VideoProc, a non-linear video editor for entry-level user.

If you want to get rid of the sound you can add '--aout=dummy' next to '--vout=dummy'.

For older VLC versions (1.0.0 and below) the same can be done with image output module

What it does:

When VLC media player runs it 'plays' the video for one second without actually showing the video on screen, and then quits, leaving us with a file named 'snap000000.jpg', containing an image of the first frame of the video.

How it works:

First select the image output with: -V image or --vout image.

Next set the interval (in seconds) you want an image from with: --start-time 0 --stop-time 1In my example the first second of the video. In that case you could omit the parameter --start-time. If you want an image from the 5th second fill in: --start-time 5 --stop-time 6

The image format will be .jpg because i provided: --image-out-format jpg. You could specify --image-out-format png to get a .png-image instead.

--image-out-ratio 24 specifies we want one image out of 24. In my case the video contains 24 images per second so this is the right value. If your video has more images per seconds you should increase this value to prevend you get more images as one. If the number is too high (for example 500) it still produces only one image, so the actual value is not so important as long as it is higher then the images per second.

--image-out-prefix snap specifies the filename must start with 'snap'. You can prefix with a path, for example c:snap and resulting images will be created there.

You can specify --image-out-replace. In that case Vlc produces the file 'snap.jpg'. This will prevent VLC from creating multiple images.
